hello if you're watching this then the first annual College and Career Information for sophomores and juniors and their parents has been a success my name is Troy Mohawk this is a sheet that shows you a slide that shows you your your counselors are this year I think most of the students are aware of who they are what we go by last name a through C misses Jessica Cho Hershey's our new couch for this year D through HSA is mrs. Lackey she is also our head counselor the person speaking right now is me h e through MC my name is Troy melhoff Angela self misses Angela South is me through R and the last names beginning with s ending in z mrs. See she rounds out our fifth counters if you have any concerns or any Quest gems were on the email on the website and email and we'll be happy to arrange for a phone or a Zoomer or a quick email response if you're needing something MK people at our school that you may or may not know about mr. Alex Cervantes and Miss Samantha so Tanya actually are not employed at Stockton high school but they are employed through Bakersfield College these are our Kelso Representatives these are two young people who are helping all of our students transition from the high school as seniors and off to college as freshman year they're also help the students this year are seniors with the financial aid so these are some names and some individuals that if you're a junior you're going to learn all about next year not so much if you're a sophomore mrs. Etheridge she is our King baby specialist she works our parents Center if you ever had a chance to drop by there and visit when we were face-to-face you probably ran into her but she has all kinds of information especially for parents about access Synergy access to the student information system and these kinds of things we do have a community Specialist or name is Ana Hurtado if you are seeking employment and you need a work permit or a permit employee Forum this is your contact person she's also a specialist who will reach out into the community and help students and parents with a variety of of things mr. Ben Garcia he's our intervention specialist here on campus and he helps our kids cross over from you not maybe doing so well especially with distance learning to take a guinea and sort of back involved with school so students might be having some issues and some problems personal problems or or School related problems he's a really a nice contact for unit we have Megan Solorio shoes are ARB social worker who's on campus one of the things that we want to emphasize in this presentation because we are not face-to-face through important to both parents and students stay in tune with what's happening stay informed we have a few different means by which you can do that either through the canvas Communication System we also have a Google Classroom scenario set up and you can see there what the codes are we reaching the class search for the sophomores & the Juniors to the counselors we have our own home page and then of course there's a web page for our Juniors on a website as well what we wanted to focus on his presentation is basically what we need to be doing students need to be doing the rest of this year's summer going into their senior year or going into their junior year and we wanted to give a kind of a brief explanation of what our students are doing after high school what direction they're taking and in this particular slide what options are available to students After High School it's not real common but we do have some students who will not attend any kind of post-secondary education bill go to work right away we do have a good portion of our students who will enter into the military service we have a smaller stop percentage of students who go right to a vocational or technical school college and learn a skill over the course of one or two years and begin jump into the the workplace environment set the school will go to the junior college is a community college directly after high school about half of our students that graduate every year will attend either Bakersfield College or tasso about 50% and then we have 4-year public season 4 year private universities about 30 to 44% of our students will go directly from Stockdale High School to one of these public or private universities that are out there either in state side of the state we do have Recruiters on campus when we are face to face Army Navy Marine Corps and the Coast Guard are here at lunch time when we get back face-to-face but they can also easily be accessed upward communication through their phone numbers you can just Google them and look them up in town whoever their contacts are here in the Bakersfield area we do have some students applying to the Naval Academy to West Point the Air Force Academy those are four year colleges universities this all begins you during the junior year so if you're a junior now by the end of this school year you should be getting yourself ready to make that application there's a number of things that you will need to do so you have to start into this college process a little bit early please contact your counselor if you are going to be making an application to the Naval Academy West Point or the Air Force Academy we're suggesting you contact your counselor today the next slide is just a brief description of at least here locally what kind of technical private tree collars we have some of you may be familiar with San Joaquin Valley College specializing in a lot of areas business areas computer areas also the health career field has a number of opportunities career opportunities for degree programs at San Juan Valley Junior College the Yu-Gi-Oh Institute over on Rosedale Highway this is where our students attend they want to for example become a dental assistant or a medical assist they have those programs over there Kaplan College Milan Institute you probably heard of some of these colleges here in Bakersfield as well I want to become a cosmetologist a hair person so are heading over to Milan Institute in some cases the price on these colleges universities they range from about 5,000 to about 25,000 just depending upon what the program is and how long the program's last their admission rolling a student's need to have a diploma or be 18 years old to filing. Is open and rolling and in most cases here these colleges universities accept people and ongoing basis because that's when they're with their programs are going through what year was with no set you no no no false start you know spring and like a four-year College will start up in the winter and and maybe an 3 months later are junior colleges in Bakersfield are in the current you're popular Bakersfield College of being the most popular a file by Taft College Bakersfield College most of you know because you know we're over 20,000 students for Sure Staff College much smaller but both of them colleges universities carry academic transfer program so our students will attend there for 2 years or 3 years and transfer onto a four-year college and university and they both also have a completion areas of associative are areas in in Technical and Vocational programs including know things like Court Reporting medical assisting graphic arts welding a number of different programs at each of these colleges universities Hill College a little bit more comprehensive in terms of their programs just because they they have so many more students and programs are on The Price is Right you can see $46 a semester credit hour this is a this is a nice option that we have here in Bakersfield on our own backyard students apply during their senior year in November so that's something to keep in mind those of you that are Juniors the filing. Will begin then the junior year play through G requirements most students some parents are familiar with these requirements these are the requirements that a student has two Master at the sea level by grade wise or higher if the student next to gain admission to a four-year College University directly after high school and you can just see the a b c d e f and g categories they're going to make note that either language then English there is a recommendation of 3 years but sometimes students mistakenly believe that a year of French and a year of English counts as two years it does not that counts as one year and so if you go through Spanish 3 Spanish 1 Spanish 2 in Spanish 3 that would cause that that would be your three years there so in mathematics the four years are recommended that would be algebra geometry Advanced algebra and then one you're after that for most students that's statistics math analysis precalculus finite mathematics lots of options there the laboratory science would be two years of one of them is biological science II what has to be in a physical side either chemistry or physics and then you can see where they're recommending to have a third year of a science requirement these are the California State University system list of the map showing you these were these 23 colleges and universities are located in the California way up North is Humboldt State University and then way down south San Diego State University so this is Dave very very large state that we live in there are 23 of these college is all up and down they all specialize in certain areas but they are public you can see the tuition is approximately 16 to $22,000 Puryear don't be scared by that because there is financial aid how do you get in their meeting all the a through G requirements to your better the colleges Target the top one-third of the graduating class you can begin filing your application in October next year if you're junior and so that'll be your senior year and then before or just after Thanksgiving 2021 this year Junior you will be done making your application to four year colleges universities so it pays to do a little bit of research now before things really start picking up during your senior University California system of little bit more competitive than the CSU to get in there targeting the top 10% of the graduating class rather than the top 30% of the graduating class of price is a little bit tag as a little bit higher completing the a through G requirement requirements you can start making your application as soon as the 1st of August and again at timeline that deadline is going to be the 30th of November also these are the research institutions the end of the institutions where you're going to find law schools medical school dental schools in and so on we have a number of private universities here in California some example would include all like USC like University of Southern California UOP would be another example Pepperdine University of Redlands there's over 100 private colleges universities in California some larger others they all differ in their price and their application timeline they're all little bit difference they really are case-by-case but my meeting is a through G requirement for the most part you're going to be meeting the private universities in California as well contact them directly for any special kinds of requirements you can see the price tag here is much higher but again nobody really pays those sticker prices when you attend those colleges because of scholarships and financial aid some of our students are venturing outside of this border wall in California and garnering a lot of money a lot of scholarship money to both private and public colleges and universities there is a western undergraduate Exchange program the movie program for states that are adjacent to California Oregon Washington Nevada out this way Montana South Dakota North Dakota Wyoming Colorado Utah Arizona these kinds of states have agreements where if you do well enough students here in California well enough usually meaning about 3.5 or higher if you do well enough if a a 3D pattern in California go states that many of their Budget Inn University through this movie program well let you pretend that you are a resident of that state in other words you get to pretend that you are paying that pretend to pay in-state tuition if you're at 4 map of the University of Nebraska over there in Lincoln or not sure if the Colorado University Colorado from Boulder has the movie program or not but you can look up these schools and colleges there's about a hundred more so that have this agreement with sweetheart case from California College testing this is been put on hold this year for those of you that Junior's not sure what's going to happen if you're a sophomore and you're listening to this presentation but for those of you turn to juniors the Cal State University and the University of California schools have made this test optional for you that doesn't mean if you get a chance to take it you probably shouldn't take it anything you can do to bring more credentials to your college application table the more competitive you're going to be just can't take it this year because not being offer but you can see the two different test there and how they're scored they are quite different a little bit different scoring but you can go to those website and you can see the content of those tests and you can see when they expect to have openings for students actually sit down and take a test either face-to-face or in-person colleges universities 3 the whole country will accept either one of those but please note that this year for you Juniors not sure about you sophomores but right now for you guys when you apply to colleges next fall they're making that optional because you just haven't access to it here yet this year hopefully when we get back to face-to-face soon that opportunity be available to you there are some test preparation sites that you can go to and you can learn and you can review a good one is the Khan Academy these are free things the PSAT and the pre act the PSAT is a 3 sat and the pre Act is a tool you can use practice on the SAT this year we didn't have them so we're hoping to be able to offer those tests next year when we get back hopefully get back face-to-face and where is ministering those tests to the students but these are practice test not count College admission how do I prepare for a career right now well you got some time hopefully at the house to do some searches and to find out about you know the different colleges universities and what career are out there you can do some research about jobs where the jobs are at what the jobs are paying these kinds of things but you can't be doing some things especially now as a junior because time is short you know when you think of that your 6-8 months away from pretty much being done with your college application that time and it is going to go by very fast so it pays to be prepared for life which really begins as a senior when you're gone sing into this business neck this is sort of what your senior year is going to look like pretty much you have two requirements US Government which is one semester economics which is one semester they they roll over to one another and then English which is a year-long requirement and then you can see you have for electives there you normally don't think of math and science social studies modern language do you know Spanish but they are for you because you satisfy those please High School graduation requirements by the end of your junior year and so now above and beyond you know you're 40 or math and so I know you're weary just call them electives at that at that point these classes the senior year going to be signing up for them in March your counselors are going to break into not sure which class we're going to break into what we're going to help you to get signed up for the same way with Junior you have a few more requirements you can see that story of your last year of sort of I have to take all these kinds of class of next year's the u.s. history English never goes away you probably figured that out by now math hopefully it never goes away and we want students definition many years of science at foreign languages and their electric possible if you take a look at this electric page you can see help you do a little bit of planning keep in mind you've only got six periods or 6 spaces during the day and you can't you know you can't take everything but you can take some of these glasses better up here and hopefully this will give you kind of an idea before we meet and before we're at or your  to select some classes next year the other thing I wanted to share with you especially for those of you that are Juniors going to be seniors but this program is available for sophomores they're going to be Juniors as well these are the different programs at the ROC of the seat program this is just an example of the three different programs are available there including 3D animation Auto technology dental assistant farmtek Sports and all kinds of different programs are available now I want to draw your attention to the very bottom where it says the application is open now that means the deadline is coming up fast so we're about two weeks away as I published an record this presentation and you can make your application at the website that's listed there you're going to need to know if you want the morning program am program or the Pierre program the afternoon program there's a Google sheet that you have to fill out with information about who you are you know contact information who your school counselor is kind of things one of the ways to get that career exploration by taking an Roc or Sea-Tac class there's another tool available to all of you it's called Naviance and you can explore Naviance you can see the website there and it allows you to take some interest aptitude inventories and and place and help you to formulate the kinds of careers that are you are best suited for and you can see the username in the past were there and then we listen to the number of other explore websites that you can go in on your own summer after 3:10 and after 11 I did forget to mention that we are going to be having summer school not sure exactly at this point what those options are going not really sure right now what the dates are going to be or even the times if we're going to have an AM or PM or both but we'll learn more about that probably mid-march going into end of April but but summer school should be hopefully apart of all of your experiences doesn't necessarily have to be a college but we always like to tell our kids that you should be doing something could be part-time employment okay but we want you to be active in and doing positive things out here to put yourself in better position for both College admission and for just learning more skills with your help you in your lifetime the California scholarship Federation call this CSF this since it's not a lot of times parents and students think it's all about money because it has that word scholarship in there that's not true I think of it as being a silver gown in blackout can students learn the silver account by doing well in school but the students have to qualify and they have to do well in school for six of their last six semesters that's grade 10 grade 11 and yes grade 12 counts and so there's an application that students have to fill out and sign up for a to make into the scholarship Federation and then when it gets to be a senior I have four for the last six semesters they've qualified then you'll be awarded the silver gown there's a special recognition if you've qualified and applied for the last six of six semesters Auto resources I want to mention some of it I showed you a little bit before but canvas you know we have our own counseling website you can check out lots of information their canvas the Google Classroom students access this is because right now cuz we're not face-to-face this is really our best way of keeping students are constituents informed about what's going on and then finally this is the last page back to our pride
