Show Transcript
well hello everybody my name is Troy mehlhoff you are here on January 11th because you are a parent or a student that will Stockdale High School next year as a freshman for our class of 2025 before we begin the presentation I would like all of you to gather up something to write with and something to take notes with I'd like you to scratch down some questions that you might have and at the end of this presentation you'll be given some contact information communication with me and I might be able to help you with with some things that you are not understanding right into this presentation today and I have an agenda listed for you on this slide and the first thing that will get into the gate honors and AP curriculum will discuss a little bit differences between gay. then we'll talk about some other opportunities available to advanced placement courses I'll talk with you specifically about the nomination and acceptance process and then I just real briefly about some important dates and activities that will be coming up this spring time hopefully I will be able to do face-to-face so jumping right in the 9th grade or gate programs are good classes that we offer the high school want you to keep in mind as we go through this presentation that the students will not be able to take AP classes we have available just too many of them keep in mind that our students are going to be most of our students going to be enrolled in six classes and they're going to be enrolled as a freshman if you're going to be enrolled in English either geometry whatever level of math that you're at but these are the gate program classes that are open in addition to that in physical education which is a requirement for your freshman year along with most of our students will take you or French and then they'll be an elective opportunity rounding out your six classes that are available slide here shows the geometry if your student was some Geometry Dash it will make it available at the level 4 Advanced algebra at the gate level occasionally will get some kids do Advanced algebra as a freshman and then they go into the precalculus or math analysis honors English courses requirements for colleges universities and graduate the chemistry is at the honors level after having completed biology or World History AP Computer Science AP slider also available in college prep the other two snakes and I want to make is that there is a big difference between the gate honors and AP classes get classes are necessarily to go faster but they do in the rear they do is because the teacher is able to move faster because of the nature student that's enrolled in that class honors a little bit different these honors classes are actually accelerated purposely accept accelerated because that students receive an extra grade point bump at their semester so if you can kind of think of a b in an honors class was kind of like almost earning an a college prep class that's how GPA Works itself into the cumulative grade point average acceleration GPA enhancement different in the sense that there is a there is a prescription there is curriculum that the teacher is held to from the national courses and so what typically happens is your teacher and advanced placement will teach at a pretty fast pace and pretty much be done with the teaching and the curriculum in March then they take the month of April review review review it it's all in preparation for a national test which is administered the first and second week of May depending upon how the student does on that test if they score well they can actually receive college credit 11th grade year again I'll leave take on six classes this year and I get back up here upgrade here wow a lot of electives here we had cycology Studio Art music theory microeconomics and macroeconomics usually don't take both at the same time but they're available along with US Government the only person on this page which are a semester longer than in economics all of the other courses here left some other courses that are available pre-calc in the media arts media arts as basically are graphic cards e-courses done with the acronym stands for what it means is that the kids are enrolled in the class. The high school and are also enrolled in class Virginia College room at the four-year college but they stay on campus here and they take from our teachers and get college credit for it and then I put down Steelyard music theory these are some classes that are offered for the most part during their some others as well but this is just to let you know that in addition to the required courses you can jump into these courses also provided they have room and then finally down to the bottom of the slide is concurrent enrollment enroll in high school here at Stockdale and they're also enrolled at one of the colleges and depending upon the course that the student wants to take sometimes not very often the under extenuating circumstances they can receive high school credit most of our kind of currently enrolled students are taking those courses for college credit only this allows the student to pick up some college credits before they actually really begin College full-time and these courses are typically taken in the late afternoon and evening the gate selection process is pretty clear I'll walk through that with you and hopefully you don't have to form that you're going to be asked to fill out some of you already have done that this form is a nomination form and students name information like that whatever feeder school you're attending support you put down the math teacher name an English teachers name because they will be providing recommendations for your student and then some personal information about you know where your work number your phone number and the signature at the bottom of this sheep you can see we need to have you mail this or take this over to the junior high school by February 5th this is our only way of knowing that your student wants to make an application if this is not filled out if it's not sent weather walked over there hand delivered over there then we don't know that your student wants to be considered for High School freshman level gate if you didn't pick up one of these papers you can email me I'll have my contact information and then I can just send you a PDF copy and you can print it and you can take it over to the junior high so this is the gate selection process students are awarded from 0 to 20 points based upon five criteria that are listed below are your English teacher will provide and evaluation your math teacher will provide evaluation 0 is lowest fours he was the best evaluation and then we use your first son Master grade point average for the STAAR test in 7th grade between 0 and 4 let's see that on the next one of the concerns about my can I use my second semester grade instead of my first semester GPA the same is true with the score because you didn't have to pick up an 15 points this is the paperwork that we use at the Kern High School District you can see that the students name that they'll be assigned a new ID when they come here to school there High School denomination is as you can see from the previous Ela this is this is the end teacher this is a math teacher so if they're evaluated evaluated really well do get 4 points if they're not evaluate semester grade point averages at the break down here how many points are awarded in each of those categories here with your grade point average and this is the test that I talked about earlier the reading in the math test above this then they get the four points at this level than they get pointed toe on and then you can see here you can get a total 20 point possible and for Kern High School District you need 15 points to qualify and so this is the paperwork that Kern High School District I determined that the student is disqualified you do fruit or not find out you're going to get something in the mail at your home mailing address I'll make sure that is up to date usually it comes out in late June or early July that paperwork it'll just be a letter basically it'll say congratulations you qualify for gate power or School staff will automatically change your college prep courses that you registered for into gate courses over the course of the summer it'll also say something like if you have any questions or if you're upset you feel like you should have qualified her if you want to be re-evaluated you don't have my name on there my contact information when you make contact with me if you want me to look at maybe a re-evaluation process for the gate program at Stop Till are some important dates and some activities the first one is the orientation is tentatively scheduled for April 22nd time and location we don't know yet we hope to meet with you in person face-to-face this orientation gives you a chance parents and students to learn about all of our activities at the high school not is the academic but the clubs and the athletic leadership positions in cheerleading and all of these are the kinds of things that you know really make high school high school registration duration is when the students and the parents sign up for classes and so again hopefully face-to-face so that a counselor will be able to help you with signing up four courses for your 9th grade year it's also the time when students can sign up for summer school classes we don't know what classes will have available for summer we will have is available to Summer but we want know what they are will know by registration hopefully until your students if they're interested in making an application to summer school they can do that I should note that have has grammar school ever since the school stop you opened up and in 1991 but in every summer we've had to turn away some students because summer school is not a guaranteed enrollment summer school is limited it's not like Splendid a little bit differently than the regular school regarding these days down Stockdale High School website here we would really encourage you to check daily if you can say things are always changing so check back with times and locations in these kind finally I would like to conclude today giving you my information including my name and my email address and my email address destroy underscore kernhigh.org phone number here is 661-665-2800 probably will be best to email I'll be able to access that from home I am working at the high school during this shutdown time but so that I have to be to be here right when you called rather than having a I thank you for listening to this and looking at this presentation I will also be posting to the website a frequently Asked question page regarding gate regarding registration as Summers pool their 10 questions on there and you'll be able to access that I would encourage you to look at those questions and answers before you call or email things should be made pretty clear anyway thanks again and have a good evening
