Modern Language Level Descriptions
Level 1
Open to grades 9-12 / 2 semesters
Students in French and Spanish Level 1 gain insights to the French and Spanish-speaking world. Students learn about the target cultures, their products, practices, and perspectives. Students develop communication skills in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking throughout the course by interacting with authentic materials from the target cultures, and interacting with others in the target language. The goal of this course is to be able to communicate (i.e. describe preferences, ask and answer questions) on familiar, everyday topics using memorized phrases and short sentences.
Level 2
Open to grades 9-12 / 2 semesters
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 1 or departmental approval demonstrating oral and written proficiency
Students in French and Spanish Level 2 develop insights to the French and Spanish-speaking world. Students learn about the target cultures, their products, practices, and perspectives. Students develop communication skills in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking throughout the course by interacting with authentic materials from the target cultures, and interacting with others in the target language. The goal of this course is to be able to communicate and exchange information on a number of familiar, everyday topics using simple sentences.
Level 3
Open to grades 10 -12 / 2 semesters
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 2 or departmental approval demonstrating oral and written proficiency
Students in French and Spanish Level 3 deepen their insights to the French and Spanish-speaking world as they investigate more about the target cultures, their products, practices, and perspectives. Students increase their communication skills in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking throughout the course by interacting with authentic materials from the target cultures, and interacting with others in the target language. The goal of this course is to be able to communicate with ease and confidence in conversations on familiar topics and discuss events in various time frames. They can also handle an unexpected complication in everyday situations.
Level 4
Open to grades 11 -12 / 2 semesters
Students in French and Spanish Level 4 expand their insights to the French and Spanish-speaking world as they interact with the target cultures, their products, practices, and perspectives. Students develop communication skills in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking throughout the course by interacting with authentic materials from the target cultures, and interacting with others in the target language. The goal of this course is to be able to communicate in an organized way and with some detail about events and experiences in various time frames, and also handle an unexpected complication in a familiar situation.
