Career & Technical Education

The CTE Department at Stockdale High School's  goal is to provide students with the skills to assist students in succeeding beyond our building.  Students will learn skills which will transfer to the work place or their college of choice.  Stockdale is proud to offer four career pathways: Business Management, Design Visual and Media Arts, Performing Arts, Software and Systems Development along with two different paths within the Project Lead the Way program.

 Course Descriptions

Computer Literacy

Open to Grades: 9-12 / one semester

Computer Literacy is designed for all students, regardless of their Pathway choice (College Preparatory, Career Technical Education (CTE), or Individual). The course covers: career exploration; touch typing; essential computer skills; computer applications such as Microsoft Office, Google Classroom, Google Docs; and an introduction to the basics of Computer Science.

Media Arts 1

Open to Grades: 9-12 / two semesters

The Media Arts 1 course teaches students how to solve design problems using industry standard software. Students will learn to think creatively as they make things in a variety of mediums. Students will learn how to use the Adobe Creative Cloud on the Apple Macintosh computer platform. This project based learning course meets the Fine Art requirement for A-G.

Media Arts 2

Open to Grades: 10-12 / two semesters

The Media Arts 2 course is an evolution in the Media Arts pathway. Students will work on real world design problems for local industry and Stockdale High. Students will create a variety of solutions using the Adobe Suite and interface with a color printer, Vinyl cutter, laser cutter, wood carver, and a 3D printer. This section is open to all students who successfully passed Media Arts 1 with an A or a B. Optional Dual enrollment credit is available through BC.

AP Computer Science Principles

Open to Grades: 10-12 / two semesters

AP Computer Science Principles introduces students to the foundational concepts of computer science and challenges them to explore how computing and technology can impact the world. With a unique focus on creative problem solving and real-world applications, AP Computer Science Principles prepares students for college and career.

Honors Computer Science A

Open to Grades: 10-12 / two semesters

Honors Computer Science A introduces students to computer programming with fundamental topics that include problem solving, design strategies and methodologies, organization of data (data structures), approaches to processing data (algorithms), analysis of potential solutions, and the ethical and social implications of computing. The course emphasizes object-oriented and imperative problem solving and design using the Java language. These techniques represent proven approaches for developing solutions that can scale up from small, simple problems to large, complex problems.

Financial Services – Stockdale Student Credit Union

Open to Grades: 11-12 / two semesters

The Financial Services program is designed to acquaint students with the structure, functions, and objectives of the banking system. Emphasis is placed on the banking system, Federal Reserve, and consumer responsibility. Selected students will receive on-the-job experience working in the branch office of Kern Schools Federal Credit Union at Stockdale High School. Enrollment is based upon job qualifications and involves an interview process.

Virtual Enterprise*

Open to Grades: 11-12 / two semesters

With an emphasis on college and career readiness, VE is an in-school, live, global business simulation that offers students a competitive edge through project-based, collaborative learning and the development of 21st-century skills in entrepreneurship, global business, problem solving, communication, personal finance and technology. In addition to giving students a head start on jobs and careers, VE reinforces students’ academic skills and achievement, reignites their interest in education, and raises their desire to graduate and pursue lifelong learning. Through developing and managing businesses, students not only stay in school, but gain expertise in problem-solving, decision-making, communication, collaboration, technology, and accessing, using and analyzing information—21st-century skills that are key to success in both college and careers.

Introduction to Engineering Design (PLTW*)

Open to Grades: 9-12 / two semesters

Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3-D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work.

Principles of Engineering (PLTW*)

Open to Grades: 10-12 / two semesters

Students explore a broad range of engineering topics including mechanisms, strength of structure and materials, and automation, and then they apply what they know to take on challenges like designing a self-powered car.

Principles of Biomedical Science (PLTW*)

Open to Grades: 9 / two semesters

In the introductory course of the PLTW Biomedical Science program, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, students examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing them to design their own experiments to solve problems.

*Student application required for entrance into PLTW Pathways
